Rapid improvements in technology, lower prices and planned obsolescence have resulted in an overwhelming surplus of electronic waste around the world. The United States is the global leader in producing e-waste. According to the Consumer Electronics Association, Americans now own 24 electronic devices per household. And most businesses upgrade their IT systems every three to five years due to lifecycle upgrades. An estimated 50 million tons of electronic waste is produced globally every year.

Most electronic waste contains secondary scrap or commodities such as lead, copper, gold and other precious metals.
