storybehindthestore.com was founded in 2012 by New Yorkers Joe Raposo and Adam Linn when they noticed a creeping loss of local culture and community, a result of the ever-expanding click-through universe we find ourselves in.

Taking “a break” from a lifetime in the music industry, Joe Raposo spent eight years with McKinsey & Company as I.T. network security administrator for their New York office. Joe realized the potential value of a service like SBTS to the small-business owner while searching for garden-hose in Up-state New York. An initial Google search turned-up a Home Depot super-store nine miles away. After an hour long round trip, Joe got his garden-hose, but was frustrated at passing three small, local hardware stores, all apparently closed on Sundays, within a mile of his starting point. Fascinated by the small “mom-and-pop” storefronts in the Civil War Era town, he wished there was a way to learn something about them: how long they’d been there, who owned them, hours of operation and so on.
